During the 1990s, the Balkan region saw intense conflict. In the middle of that conflict, Bosnia (Bosnia and Herzegovina; BiH) was being influenced and torn apart by three groups, each with a different ethnic majority trying to claim their rights. The layout of today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina is the result of the resolution of that conflict. Divided into three regions: Bosnia, Herzegovina, and the Republic of Serbia (Srpska), present day Bosnia is beginning to make a name for itself as a place of adventure and travel.
The capital of Sarajevo, itself a divided place in the 1990s, is transforming into a center of arts and entertainment attracting cultural explorers and modern historians seeking to understand what happened during that time of conflict.
Much like other destinations within the former Yugoslavia and the Balkan region, Bosnia is in a period of transition. Bosnians are looking to shed the ignominious reputation of a bygone conflict, and develop into something better. The mountains, rivers, and plains offer adventure and beauty to be enjoyed. The cities of Banja Luka, Mostar, and Sarajevo along with others seek to draw outsiders with their charm and intrigue making Bosnia and Herzegovina a worthwhile travel destination.
