While Montenegro is certainly known for its rough, unforgiving terrain, there are countless locations where the landscape grows gentler, showing off rolling hills and fields bursting with wildflowers, or lush forests with gradually sloping paths. These beautiful nature spots are perfect for the little adventurers as well as adults, and they make Montenegro a wonderful host for family hikes.

Some of the best family-friendly hiking trails are located in the signature national and nature parks of Montenegro. Biogradska Gora, for example, has a wonderfully meandering hike around Biogradsko Jezero, its main glacial lake. Further to the north, families can drive to the stunning Black Lake and then hike around it. Skadar Lake has several trails that are specifically geared to for family hikes. The trek from Old Town Kotor to the top of St. John's fortress is another hike that is great for the whole family hikes, although really little hikers (under the age of 6) may need to ride on mom/dad's shoulders for part of it. And of course, any farmstay or katun accommodation will be set in a mountainscape perfect for exploring as a family. It doesn't matter where you take your family in Montenegro - there will always be some tantalizing terrain ready to be explored by even the youngest adventurers.
