Kuca Kljajica – Organic Farm and Apiary – Montenegro

When it comes to rustic, traditional Montenegro, the Kljajić family nails it. They serve commoners and royalty alike.

When it comes to rustic, traditional Montenegro, the Kljajić family nails it at their farm stay–Kuca Kljajica. Built in 1918, their traditional home’s modern modifications (like a bathroom) have been designed to work brilliantly with the space. The new house offers a modern take on village life. The family practices organic farming of vegetables and raspberries. They are also 1 of 3 certified organic beekeepers in the country. And yes, they have served their honey to royalty including Prince Charles and Camilla.

Family dining at the Kljajic Kuca Farm

At the Kljajic family farm, organic foods find their way in abundance to the table where Maja serves up monster family-style helpings of local dishes. They swear that no one has ever left their table hungry and they plan to keep it that way. Milan, Maja, and their children exhibit the beauty that is Montenegrin hospitality.

While Kuca Kljajica immerses you in local culture, it also opens up great hiking and mountain biking on surrounding mountains. One challenging hike in the area is the climb up to the Widowmaker, a village highlight. Lake and fly-fishing in nearby rivers are also accessible to enjoy the peaceful setting and have a chance to catch a grayling or other unique fish species.

  1. Wonderfully authentic experience

We stayed in the Kljajic house on a cool March weekend. The rustic cabin was kept comfortable with a wood fire and warm hospitality. We opted for dinner and breakfast and had so much national cuisine, we could only sample everything we were served. The bathroom was tastefully added to leave the home in touch with its rural surroundings and provide modern convenience. The hosts were more than hospitable and eager to make our stay enjoyable.

  2. I will definitely go there agin!

Amazing location, the food is domestic and delicious, hosts are one of the nicest people I have met.

  3. GREAT PEOPLE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY

Well, we hadn’t even entered into to the old house but a meal was already on the table. And that meal is something to remember.
Later, I was just enjoying hanging around with this great family. There I realized that they are one of the first families that are trying to bring the world to Montenegro. And they are doing it!
    Go, you will not regret.

  6. Loved my stay here!

I loved my stay here! It felt like a wonderful break from city/busier life. The food was incredible and fresh. The hosts were so kind and made sure we had all we needed. It was a cozy place to spend quality time with friends. I would be happy to visit again!

  7. Loved breakfast outside w/ mountain valley view

Stayed here for one night and it was fantastic. Loved the house and the old fireplace. Food was delicious and plentiful! Hosts were friendly and we had a great time with them (even though we only spoke a little Montenegrin). Best part was breakfast outside looking out on the mountain valley.

  8. A definite repeat. Wonderful place!

Stayed here in early June. Wonderful place to stay. The bathroom was super nice and the beds were cozy. The food was so amazing and the hosts were extremely nice! Would love to go again!

Wonderful stay! Very welcoming and enjoyable experience. The quaint house and lovely hospitality made my time in the village adventurous while having the comforts of home. Highly recommend staying if you desire an authentic mountain getaway with great food and an amazing host family.

  10. What an adventure!

What an adventure! We stayed in the Kljajic family mountain home for one night and would suggest it for an authentic night in the mountains. Maja was extremely hospitable and made a huge Montenegrin dinner! We enjoyed the fantastic views, home-cooking and village as a whole.

  11. Idyllic!!

Our group of six stayed in this adorable three-bedroom log cabin in October – it was cold at outside (at night), but we were toasty and comfortable inside with a fire stove, hot tea, and generous bedding. The setting was beautiful and the food was hearty and delicious – all local. During the day, we walked through the gorgeous countryside, seeing farm animals, small scale agriculture and greeting friendly villagers along the way. Idyllic!!

  12. Highlight of our trip

Our two-night stay with the Kljajić family was a highlight of our trip to Montenegro. Milan, Maja, Jelena, Jovana and Gaga made us feel so welcome in their beautiful village of Lubnice, where we helped harvest apples, explored the surrounding hills, and feasted on delicious homegrown meals. The guesthouse was both charmingly rustic and very comfortable. Our only disappointment was that we had to leave.

  13. Beautiful people, place, and unimaginable hospitality!

I think the most memorable experiences any person can have is when they meet warm hearted people in a warm hearted environment and more so when you leave a place with a ‘tear in your eye’ because you know you have met and stayed in a place which few others will ever experience!:) – I still wake up and think of the people and the place and miss Milan, Maya, Jaro and their extended family and friends deeply! – beautiful people in a beautiful place with such hospitality I didn’t realise or expect was possible in this modern world of ours….nothing more to say other than just visit and see for yourself how life is lived in this area of Montenegro!……a truly humbling and personal experience and can still taste their character and sense through the homemade honey and and Apple and Plum based Rakia:)) – a truly wonderful experience…. thank you all!:))
