Samel’s Cottage in Prokletije National Park – Montenegro

A key structure in the redeveloping Bajrovic Katun inside Prokletije National Park. Nature, adventure, rest, and national foods in abundance...

Prokletije National Park holds out great adventures for mountain bikers, hikers, and nature lovers. The area now offers local culture with stays in a Montengrin katun too. These mountain huts, usually grouped together for community, are a unique part of the Montenegrin culture where shepherds would sleep during the summer months. While this is still the case for some katuns, others can be a memorable get-away for adventurers of all sizes. Samel’s Cottage in Prokletije National Park offers a perfect night or extended stay for MTB and hiking groups.

Ermina puts on a clinic when it comes to national foods. We were stuffed when we finished at her table. You will be too. It’s all delicious–especially the national cakes that she bakes. With a huge desire to provide great hospitality to all that stay at Samel’s Cottage, she insists that breakfast is included with a night’s stay. You can get your calories in before heading out to massive adventure all around.

Located inside the rugged Prokletije National Park, Samel’s Cottage works for those taking the Peaks of the Balkans route or for day outings to any of the surrounding peaks as well as the local favorite but still largely undiscovered Hridsko Lake. You will definitely want to add that spot to your do-not-miss list.

  1. Heaven on Prokletije

I absolutely loved staying here. Surrounded by the Prokletije mountains, this vacation spot looks like paradise. The outdoor eating gazebo is genius as it allows you to see 360 degrees of nature while enjoying hearty mountain meals. It was also cool to get a real glimpse of pasture life. The cows roam the hilly area surrounding the cabin, and the hosts at this cabin will gladly accommodate guests who want to come inside the barn and help during milking time. As part of a group with three younger children, the cows and barn became pretty popular attractions. I loved this experience because of how close it brought me and my family to the mountain environment. If vacationing in Montenegro, definitely drop by this spot of heaven for a stay or at least for a cup of coffee and a piece of their great cheese pie.

  2. Can't get enough of the beautiful views, hikes and new foods.

I’m ruined for traditional, commercialized travel. I can’t get enough of the beautiful views, hikes and new foods to taste. Our stay here was fantastic. The kids had plenty of room to run free and explore nature. The hike to the lake was breathtaking. What woman can’t argue with not having to cook or sacrificing the use of a bathroom while still experiencing nature at it’s finest?

  4. Even better than we could have imagined!

We had a fantastic time at Samel’s cottage! Everything was even better than we could have imagined (the food! the nature! the cosy hut! the calm friendliness of our hosts! the view! the hikes!). My personal highlight was that Ermina taught me how to milk a cow (she and the cow were very patient). And then drinking some of that fresh milk and having freshly made cheese for breakfast while enjoying a stunning view of the mountains…hard to beat!

It is the perfect get-away for anybody who loves nature and enjoys to be able to walk for hours through the forest and meadows without meeting anybody (at least that was the case for us in early June). And there are many well-marked hiking trails.

If you have a small rental car, don’t like to drive on bumpy roads or even get to Plav by public transportation (I think there are buses from Podgorica) Meanderbug is able to arrange transportation for you up to the cottage (we paid 40€ for the round trip).

  5. Wish we could stay longer

Wow! What can we say, beautiful location, amazing food and a great place to explore the Prokletije mountains. We only wish we’d stayed longer. Ermina was a fantastic host and made us feel very welcome. During our short stay we hiked up Tromedja – a 4 hour walk from the cottage, great views over to Albania and Kosovo. The views from the cottage are unreal, watching the sunset whilst eating Ermina’s lovely home cooked food was a treat. Hope to visit for longer one day again soon.

  6. Gorgeous Hiking

What a great spot. We had the best guided hike with Ramu – we foraged for chantarelles, blueberries, and raspberries which were all amazing. He was incredibly kind and patient with our kids. And he and his wife served us his homemade plum rakija – delicious. That all combined with excellent views and a cozy cottage… this is a no brainer, definitely take the chance to visit Prokletije and stay here.
