My Slovenian neighbor and friend first introduced Slovenia’s majestic beauty to me. Her love for her home, country and people always overflowed from her heart. She wanted to introduce me to what it was that she deeply missed. I remember that day in her apartment. She described the people and history while I gasped at the scenic views in her pictures. I soon began to feel the itch to travel, and my next destination, Bled, her favorite town. I was drawn in by not only its views, but also the historic castles and island church with its central location to recreational opportunities.
Penzion Mlino is a cottage set just off the Glacial lake renovated from a home to a guest house. Mlino is one of the original settlements of Bled with records dated in 1004 AD. This rounded rooftop villa from old sits across Bled’s shore where pletnas (cloth covered boats originating in Bled) await to travel to the famous island church situated in the center of the lake. The rooms are not the most elaborate, but we enjoyed our home-like suite. Our suite included a double bed in one room, a kids’ room with twin beds, and a bathroom. It was perfect for our family. After a day filled with hiking, walking around town, and skiing, arriving back in our room enjoying our window view of the serene lake and Bled castle was exactly what we needed.
Upon arrival, we soon realized that Penzion Mlino had more than meets the eye. We were greeted and escorted to our room by one of the family members, who owns this little Bed and Breakfast. Our room was complete with fresh fruits from the local market. The morning breakfast had a variety of finely cooked choices that it left our whole family pleasantly full. I enjoyed the fresh baked breads with homemade Slovenian sausage and yogurt. My son, the meat-lover, delighted in the bacon, sausage and yogurt while my husband completed his meal with fresh fruit. We also learned that the hotel’s restaurant is been rated as the local’s favorite. We were truly treated like family. When asked about what to do and see in Bled, the hostess did not send us down the normal tourist path, but she introduced us to the roads less traveled and better suited endeavors for our family.
If you are looking to visit Bled, Slovenia, you must stay at Penzion Mlino. I know it will become your home away from home, as it has become for our family.
