Pokljuka: World-class Skiing on a Budget

pokljuka, skiing, biathlon

Story: Before leaving our hotel in the morning, I asked the front desk what things we should see if we wanted to enjoy outdoor adventures. (Sidenote: Don’t go to Bled if you hate the outdoors.) She recommended Vintgar, but when she saw my little one, she offered a second suggestion: Pokljuka. She said it would offer us a variety of things and an even better treat for him, SNOW! So, off we went.

Pokljuka is a plateau that rests in the Julian Alps within Slovenia. It’s about 25 kilometers (16 miles) outside of Bled in the Triglav National Park. (BTW, Triglav is the only national park in Slovenia, and is great for hiking, trekking, mountaineering, skiing, etc.)

Near the top of Pokljuka, the road comes to a stop at a hotel. The area as a whole is known as the Sportni Ski Center. The ski center plays host annually to the Biathlon World Cup. Outside of this, the center remains open for visitors to ski, snowshoe, and practice their overall biathlon skills if they wish. For us, the day consisted of sledding and snow fights. 🙂

Vibe: Very few things could possibly offer a better environment for such an array of sport. Relaxed. People having fun, and constant activity.

Recommendations: Depends on what you are looking for, but if you go, be prepared to do something outside. Bike trails, ski lifts, and hiking trails for all levels speak to some of the diversity offered by Pokljuka. My highest recommendation would be to visit the Sportni Ski Center during the winter, rent some skis or take your own, and hit the cross-country trails or ride up the lifts. If snowshoeing is more your style, the rental center offers those as well. Get some and chart your own course on the mountain.

Notes: Except for the lift pass, the Sportni Ski Center is free if you have your own equipment. Rentals are cheap. This is an excellent way to spend a wintry day.

I want to head back to Pokljuka in the spring through fall times for the hiking and trekking offered when it’s not covered in snow. Or if there’s still snow, snowshoeing will definitely be on the to-do-list.

Place: Športni Center Triglav Pokljuka Srednja vas v Bohinju 165/a (Rudno polje) 4267 Srednja vas v Bohinju. This was the only address I could find. Look for Pokljuka on a map and follow the only road going there.
